About the author: Michael West is the bestselling author of Cinema of Shadows, Skull Full of Kisses, The Wide Game, Spook House, and the critically acclaimed Legacy of the Gods series. He lives and works in the Indianapolis area with his wife, their two children, their turtle, Gamera, and their dog, King Seesar. West avoids manhole covers and sidewalk grates whenever possible. He just doesn’t know what’s down there, and he’s not sure he wants to find out.

Top Ten items you need to have when writing a book.
1. Great characters.  You can have the best ideas in the world, the most interesting and original concept ever, but if you don't have characters that people like and want to get to know better, it is all for nothing.
2. Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.  Although, thanks to Stephen Zimmer, I am now a Monster Energy addict as well.
3. My laptop.  That, you know, kind of goes without saying.
4. Music. I have to have something playing while I write.  Usually, it is either a film score that fits the mood of what I'm writing, but I also listen to 80s music, some Hair Metal, and I love Octane on Sirius XM.
5. Darkness. I like it to be as dark as possible when I write.  I will close all the blinds during the day and turn off most of the lights at night.  As long as I can see to read my story notes and the laptop screen, I'm good.
6. Solitude. I like to write while the kids are at school and the wife is at work or after they've all gone to bed. Sometimes, if I'm writing and people keep coming up to me to talk about this, that, or the other, I will play Jack Nicholson's rant from The Shining off of YouTube.  "That means DON'T come in!"  They love that.  LOL
7. Pre-readers whom I trust. People who say, "this is so good" or "this sucks," and don't give you any suggestions on how or why it works or doesn't work are just not helpful.  You want people who are going to be honest with you and tell you to your face what you're doing right, what you're doing wrong, and what you need to make it better.
8. An understanding family. While writing is a solitary thing, just you and your laptop and the voices in your head, it helps to have others around you who understand when you are "in the zone" and give you time to do what you need to do. They listen to you talk about people who don't exist as if they were friends, and they love you even if they think you're weird and just a bit mad.

9. Research. They say "write what you know," but that doesn't mean you should limit yourself. I read a lot, and everything I read has the potential to spark an idea. And, if I'm in the middle of a novel and need to know how a bit of equipment works, or what it's like on the highest mountain or in the ocean's depths, even though I've never been there, I can research what its like and find people who I need to talk to about it. The more realistic you can make your fiction, the less likely you are to kick people out of your story.
10. An idea. This is the first thing you need, obviously, but it's not really the most important thing. An idea is like a starter's pistol. You don't need a starter's pistol to go out running, not really, but it gets you going. Once you get started however, an idea can change, or if it doesn't work, it can be scrapped altogether.

Book Synopsis for Hades’ Disciples: Terrifying creatures exist all around us, hiding in plain sight. Ancient. Deadly. They gather in secret, conspiring, dreaming of nothing less than humanity’s destruction, and their numbers are growing. Earl Preston knows the danger all too well. After tangling with a horde of mythological sea monsters in Colonial Bay, he has been tasked with finding these beasts and exposing their plans whatever they may be. But Earl is not the only one with a mystery on their hands. At the very top of the world, Carol Miyagi has stumbled onto an artifact from Earth’s past, something magnificent held captive in a prison of ice and snow. Now, Carol and Earl must work quickly to decipher the will of the gods–a plot that defies imagination–and to stop their followers from carrying it out. They thought the nightmare was over, but they are about to discover that the horror has only just begun. Hades Disciples is Book Two in the Legacy of the Gods Series.
