Author Bio
Grigory (a.k.a Grisha) Ryzhakov grew up in the Siberian Far East, bathing in the icy waters of Seas of Okhotsk and Japan and playing hide-and-seek in the snowdrifts that carpeted his native Sakhalin Island. He later travelled thousands of miles to vibrant London, on the way collecting his MSc degree in biochemistry at Moscow State and PhD in molecular biology at Cambridge University. Meanwhile, Grigory has been ceaselessly creating poems, songs and prose until eventually he wrote his debut novel "Mr Right & Mr Wrong". "Usher Syndrome" was his first published story, also adapted for the stage and performed at London's Barons Court Theatre in 2010.

‘Betty, you’ve got a visitor.’
The old woman turned around and looked at them curiously.
‘Elisa, if you need me, there’s a call button above the bed,’ the nurse said before leaving.
‘Thank you very much,’ Elisa said. She approached the puzzled old woman and hugged her. ‘Betty, I’m so glad to see you. Let me kiss you.’
‘My darling, I’m not feeling my normal self today,’ Betty replied. ‘I can’t recall your name.’
‘Elisa. You really don’t remember me? William told me you didn’t have many visitors.’
‘William? Have you met with him recently?’ Betty’s face lit up with delight.
‘Several weeks ago. He told me about you. I came to Aglia for a short stay and decided it’d be great to see you,’ Elisa said.
‘My dear, tell me how we know each other,’ Betty said and peered at her. ‘Please, forgive my old age. My memory is failing me. It won’t be long for me.’
‘What nonsense, Betty! You look marvellous. The pure air here is definitely good for you. And William will be visiting you soon. He’s on a trip at the moment, isn’t he?’
‘I don’t know, my darling, he never tells me in advance when he’s coming.’ Betty glanced at her desk.
‘Oh, what do you have here?’ Elisa asked, pointing to the pile of postcards.
‘Just some old photographs,’ Betty replied, and put a newspaper on top of her card collection.
‘May I have a look please?’ Elisa asked, reaching out for the cards, but Betty, standing up, blocked her way and said firmly, ‘My dear, let me show you our beautiful garden.’
‘Thank you, Betty, but the nurse already did,’ Elisa lied and with a swift move grabbed the card collection from the desk. ‘May I?’
‘What are you doing?’ the old woman exclaimed.
‘Please, don’t fret, Betty. I’m just curious.’ Elisa looked at her with slight menace. She dropped the newspaper on the floor, and then started going through the cards, looking at the dates and addresses.
Betty turned back and pressed the button on the wall to call for the nurse.
‘That was not wise,’ Elisa said.
‘Give me back my cards! How dare you intrude like this,’ the old woman bellowed with surprising strength and authority in her voice.
That moment the nurse walked in the room, and Betty started complaining to her immediately. Elisa turned to them, looking unruffled, and stabbed the nurse in the neck with a knitting needle, which appeared in her right hand out of nowhere. As her victim slumped on the floor with a muted scream, the killer shut the door and turned to Betty, who has frozen with fear on the spot.

‘I warned you.’
