In just a few months Harp Evans
will be officially coming of age and graduating from high school. She will be
free from the mother that never wanted her, the house that never felt like
home, and the disappointment of the last seventeen years. What she doesn’t know
is that her mother has been holding onto a secret that has the potential to
derail her dreams and destroy her already faulty sense of self.
A self-proclaimed recluse, Harp
spends most of her time practicing the cello, in the hopes of earning a full
scholarship that will grant her freedom, but will also send her away from her
best friend Connor Williams, who is becoming more than just a friend.
As revelations are made, will
Harp still feel the same way about leaving everyone that cares about her
behind? Or will she continue to pursue the life she’s been dreaming of for as
long as she can remember?
Cassie Shine released her debut
young adult novel, Harp's Song in November 2013, finally finishing the short
story she started in her college creative writing class … many, many moons
ago. She has always been an avid reader and lover of music (yes, she was in the
high school marching band). While she has a weak spot for all things teeny
bopper, especially boy bands, she also loves classical, country, rock and well,
pretty much everything.
After living in St. Louis for
more than ten years, she and her husband packed up a U-Haul and headed west.
They currently live in Orange County, CA with their furry kids Finnegan and
Molly.
INTERVIEW WITH CONNOR WILLIAMS FROM HARP’S SONG
BY CASSIE SHINE
Why do you like playing baseball?
My dad played ball and when I
started Little League, it just clicked. I love playing on a team, especially
with my best friend Ethan. And, I love playing outdoors. I tried basketball
when I was younger and I felt like I was cooped up-I hated it.
What drew you to be friends with Harp?
You know, it was just
something about her that I couldn’t resist. We were only kids-like 11-when we
first met. It was the first day of 6th grade. She looked scared to
death and I was new in town, so I just figured it made sense to introduce
myself. When I realized that we had homeroom together it just became habit to
wait for each other walk together. She didn’t really open up, though, until
that summer when she came over a lot.
What’s it like to have a girl for a best friend?
It’s great. Don’t get me
wrong-I love my other best friend-Ethan. But it’s nice to have a girl for a
friend because you can be a little more … sensitive, I guess, or vulnerable and
she won’t judge you like a guy would.
What’s your favorite subject in high school?
Biology and Anatomy. Anything
with science, really.
Tell us your favorite memory of you and Harp.
That would have to be the
summer we went to Florida with my family. I’d never seen her so relaxed … it
was great. She was happy and we had a great time hanging out on the beach with
my little brother, Patrick. She drank about a million virgin strawberry
daiquiri’s that her tongue was stained red for like a week afterward.
What is the video game that you and your little
brother Patrick like to play the most?
We play Madden a lot. I
usually win.
Do you know what your major is going to be next
year when you go to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill?
Yeah, I’m declaring Biology.
I want to be a doctor-or maybe a high school science teacher. I think I have
some time to figure that out.
How do you handle the conflict between Harp and
her mom, Anne?
I don’t handle it very well.
There are a lot of times when I hate Anne-and I mean that. But, at the end of
the day, she’s Harp’s mom and that means something.
What are your current top five songs?
Ok, this isn’t in any order …
1.
Night
Train by Jason Aldean
2.
Sail by
Awolnation
3.
I Drive
Your Truck by Lee Brice
4.
Demons
by Imagine Dragons
5.
Hey
Pretty Girl by Kip Moore
My all-time favorite, though,
is listening to Harp play her cello. She’s really incredible and I’m so proud
of her for getting a scholarship to Oberlin.
Tell us about your most embarrassing moment.
Oh God … that’s easy. Ethan
and a couple of my buddies on the baseball team decided to prank me and they
took all my clothes-including my towel-when I was showering after a game. I had
to make a really embarrassing walk of shame to Coach’s office.
