Excerpt
Leaving the Notre Dame de Paris after this special Christmas Holiday ceremonial mass, the pair walked back to The Bleu. Later today they would head to the vineyard and prepare for the wedding two weeks away. Once outside, Olivier, dressed in a knee-length dark gray wool coat accessorized with an old scarf, and Brie, clad in a dark velvet green coat with an old scarf of Olivier’s made their way down the steps and headed for the bridge, departing the island which lay in the middle of the Seine River. It was bitter cold out with a constant wind. Snow seemed imminent.
“I do believe, Brie, you may see your snow you love, even today,” Olivier quipped. They had forgotten gloves today but both had boots on. The old scarfs made Olivier think about his parents. He hadn’t really told Brie much about them; he must tell her at the vineyard before the wedding. She would understand and probably question why he hadn’t mentioned all this before. She had been too polite to ask, especially since she ended up with the necklace; she felt she should not intrude upon this intimate piece of jewelry or his mother. He would tell her when the time was right. Maybe they would have little children of their own, little-Volney-Lavalles. He looked at Brie and this thought made him smile; he put his arm around her waist, bringing her close as they walked along the Seine.
“Olivier, let’s get a coffee to warm us up,” Brie spoke as she spied a sweet shop. They went inside to get warm and share a savory sweet pastry. Brie ordered the coffee and impressed Olivier with her French speaking skills. “S’il vous plait, une tasse de-” Brie paused to assess her own spoken words.
And Olivier finished with, “café.”
“Thank you. I mean . . . merci!”
“Marvelous, you are learning so quickly.” Olivier was impressed. Sooner or later they would be having conversations in French, he thought. Sharing a delectable sweet, they fell, further in love. “Brie, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure, ask anything,” she replied.
He looked at her, smiled, and asked, “Do you want children, children of your own, with me?”

She looked at Olivier, pondered the thought and decided that was a fair question. She never thought about it anymore as she had gotten over the idea a few years ago in her late thirties. Back in her twenties, she wanted them, in the midst of her career, but it never happened so she put it aside. But now, she should reconsider with Olivier. She breathed in rather loudly and blew it out.
