BEYOND FATE Synopsis:

There are always two sides to every story . . .

His whole life, Jonah Whitecomb has strove to meet everyone’s expectations of him: the perfect student, dutiful son, loyal twin, accomplished surfer, and powerful Magical. But behind his carefully composed façade hides the truth of how his family has fallen apart, leaving Jonah more often than not feeling adrift. To complicate matters, he fell in love long ago with a girl in his dreams, one he’s never told anyone about, including his twin brother.

Just when life seems its bleakest, Jonah discovers that Chloe is real. Wanting to finally reach out and grab happiness for himself, he embarks on a journey to track down the girl of his dreams, only to find that happy endings aren’t always guaranteed, the best laid out plans can go horribly awry, and sometimes, you have to simply let yourself go along for the ride.

* Beyond Fate is Jonah’s point-of-view of the events of A Matter of Fate, and is a companion novella.

About Heather Lyons:

Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—She’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.

Excerpt:
“Jonah,” Astrid says, “you are very silent about all of this. How are you doing, darling?”
Now’s a good time to tell them how this all really went down, but I’m a coward, because I’m too scared of losing Astrid and possibly alienating Kellan right now. So I managed to admit what I can and still be absolutely truthful with them. “I get why he wants to move,” I practically whisper. This is the truth, right? “And . . . I guess, in a way, it makes sense. But . . .” I stop. Clear my throat. “He was such an asshole today. I can’t believe he said the things he did.” I can’t look at anybody in the room right now. “He really hates us.”
“No, baby,” Astrid croons, ruffling my hair. Gods. How am I going to be able to give up seeing her everyday? Why hadn’t I considered that? “He loves you two, just in his own way. People who have Connections act differently than the rest of us. We can’t understand what a Connection makes people do, what lengths it’ll take them to. Your father and mother had a very strong Connection, boys. Her death altered him. He is . . . lost. Bereft. Life is empty for him, and while the rest of us would look to the survivors—our children, family, friends—he cannot see past the hole that now exists in his soul. And it’s not because he doesn’t want to, it’s because he can’t.
Her hand squeezes my shoulder gently. I look up now. Her pale lavender eyes meet mine; they’re so sad. Like . . . like she knows what I’ve done.
Like I have a Connection, too. Which, I guess makes sense, considering she’s a Seer. But she’s always been so careful not to read us, claiming she’s too emotionally invested, ala the whole doctor not operating on their own kid bit. Maybe, though . . . maybe she knows?
“He can, though,” Kellan is saying, but Astrid shakes her head as she refocuses on him.
“No, sweetling. He can’t. Connections can be wonderful things, but, like all Magical elements, they are duel-edged. Just as you can make people feel the most incredible bliss, you can turn them murderous or depressed. Connections bind two people together in love and completion, and yet, when broken, they are equally as destructive. Ewan didn’t have a choice, my darlings. He still doesn’t have a choice. And while some people, like Hannah, finds solace in reliving every moment of her Connection’s life, your father, instead, finds his in withdrawing. Moving to California might be good for him. Maybe, outside of the house that your mother built and still infuses with her presence, he will find a small slice of peace, as elusive as it is.”
“Don’t defend him,” Kellan snarls. “Do you know what he said about you? He claims you’re ruining us. That you make us soft. So . . . so . . . don’t defend him.”
She leans over and kisses him on his temple. “He is wrong, and you and I both know it. But he no longer understands love, because it deserted him and left him a shell of whom he once was. You should know that better than anyone, Kellan dear. You should know that love makes you stronger.”
I’m not so sure about that anymore. Love has only broken us.
