The Carolyne Letters by Abigail B. Calkin Review

About The Carolyne Letters: Amelia, a young American woman studying abroad, falls in love with the wrong man in 1964 Scotland. When their ill-fated affair results in a shocking pregnancy, Amelia is faced with three life-changing choices: give up the child for adoption, have an abortion or raise the child. In a creative journal style, The Carolyne Letters follows Amelia as she makes all three decisions.

About the Author: Abigail B. Calkin’s first novel, Nikolin, was a finalist for the 1994 Benjamin Franklin Award. She is currently working on her third novel, a historical fiction sequel to Nikolin. She is a consulting editor for the Journal of Precision Teaching. Raised in Framingham Centre, Massachusetts, and New York’s Greenwich Village, she now lives in the Midwest.

My Review
This was a very interesting read for me because I normally do not read "journals". However I think that every woman can feel for the main character, whether it be because they were dumped during hard times or because they also got pregnant. I was happy that the author took a straight forward approach to the characters choices, and did not turn her book into a statement for or against abortion or adoption. I am not sure that I understood what choice was finally made, but I do know that at the end of the book I felt happy. I would love to see a sequel with Carolyne and her reaction to the letters, or at least Amelia's family reacting to them. This is definitely a book for strong women. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from booksparkpr, however all opinions are my own.
