Anything but normal…
Dani Shane just wants her daughter to have what she never did—a normal life. But “normal” leaves the equation when sixteen-year old Riley is found talking to Dani’s only friend, Alex—who has been dead for forty years.
In the small river town of Bethany, Dani never fit in. Being different pushed her to the fringes of society, and even leaving town for two decades didn’t stop the talk. Now that she’s back, so is Alex. Mischievous and sexy and still hot enough to melt her shoes. Between his popping in at inopportune moments and her having to hide her daughter’s new talent, Dani fears that her plans for staying under the radar may be short-lived.
As Dani scrambles to get solid footing under her family, secrets buried for forty years begin to unearth themselves. She and Alex have always been connected, but he is hiding something. The computer is making her hear things. Weird memories that she doesn’t recognize keep popping up in her mind. Then there’s that little thing she hasn’t told her daughter yet—that some of the people she sees aren’t breathing.

My Review:
Wow. I have not read a ghost story like this in a long time. It is hard enough to be a single mom and to have to go back to your hometown to live with your dad. Never mind being an outsider your whole life. I felt so bad for Dani. However she can talk to ghosts and I wish I could. Dani tries to do everything she can for her daughter, but 16 year olds very rarely get along with their parents. However Riley is like her mom in more ways than she knows. She can also talk to ghosts and of course she starts talking to Alex. Alex is a ghost that was Dani's only friend while she got alienated from the people around her. Dani loves Alex, but what is she going to say to her daughter? How can she tell her to not talk to her love interest when he is a ghost? Is there even a point? The author chose for the ghost to not have the ability to touch. Can Dani ever get what she wants out of this relationship? Will her daughter follow the same path?
Then Dani meets a real man that is flesh and bone. Jason is alive, and also Dani's boss. I felt so bad for Dani. She loves a ghost and meets her boss for the first time by hitting his car. As the book progressed there were so many secrets that I could not believe what I was reading. The ending surprised me, and I could not believe it. This is definitely a book about love. Loving your family, love lost, loving the unavailable, and finding your way home.
I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own!
