The Mermaid of Brooklyn by Amy Shearn~ 2013 Blogsparks Summer Reading Road Trip!!!

The Mermaid of Brooklyn by Amy Shearn (Women's fiction, Simon & Schuster, May 2013)
Formerly an up-and-coming magazine editor, Jenny Lipkin is now your average, stretched-too-thin Brooklyn mom, tackling the challenges of raising two children in a cramped Park Slope walk-up. But when her husband Harry, a compulsive gambler, vanishes one evening without a word, Jenny finally reaches her breaking point. Pulled from the brink by an unexpected (and, as it turns out, sometimes annoying) supernatural ally, Jenny is forced to rethink her ideas about success, motherhood, romance, and relationships. But confronting her inner demons—of both the mermaid and non-mermaid variety—is no easy task . . .

My Review:
This was a good read. This reminded me of the joke where the mom hides in a closet to eat a candy bar because she doesn't want to share it. lol. We all need to escape. What better place to escape then to the wide, deep ocean? Jenny feels the pressures of being a mom all too well. What Jenny did not expect was her husband to disappear and to find help with a sea creature. The lore surrounding the Mermaid is well known, and it is magically woven into this book. I liked the ending as well and I was surprised by Jenny's decision, however I am not in her shoes, so I know she made the choice that was best for her.
I am giving this book a 5/5 because I love lore. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
