Elven Blood

BLURB:
Sam
may be the Iblis, but she is also an imp with a price on her head. The powerful demon Haagenti won’t rest until
she’s dragged back to Hel for “punishment”.
Sam knows she can’t face Haagenti and win, so when an Elf Lord offers to
eliminate the demon in return for her help, Sam accepts. It’s a simple job – find and retrieve a
half-breed monster dead or alive. But
finding this demon/elf hybrid isn’t proving easy and time is running out.

Excerpt One:
The hiss of Wyatt’s shower penetrated through the fog of my
pre-caffeinated brain. I was still
sprawled on the bed, hidden under a heap of covers, wondering whether I could
sneak in a few more minutes of sleep. It was rent day, and I was already late
in making my collection rounds.
Stretching, I poked my head from under the blanket and watched a small
lizard cross the floor. It had a
scorpion tail, pointed ears and crimson eyes that darted intelligently across
the room. Those red eyes locked onto the
bed just as I realized this wasn’t a lizard.
It was a demon—and not the usual Low one either.
There was a flash, and I rolled across the bed and onto the
floor just before the mattress sliced into two smoking sections. Unfortunately I was trapped in a tangle of
sheets. Instinctively I converted my
form, deconstructing my usual human one into basic atoms and re-assembling into
a creature that was small and hard to kill.
I heard a muffled curse, and I felt the sheets snatched from
above me. The demon was no longer a
lizard; he was bipedal with furry, clawed legs and a scaled torso. Arms hung down past his knees, ending in
sharp hooks. His head twisted and
turned, forked tongue tasting the air as he searched for me.

Author Interview:
1. what is an Iblis?
“Iblis”
is a djinn in Islam that is usually equated with the Christian Satan. When I began the Imp series, I wanted there
to be a historical title that reflected the leader of the demons at the time of
the fall, but I didn’t really want to use “Satan” since it can be a turn-off
for some readers. I do occasionally use
the terms Ha-Satan or The Adversary, as that’s the kind of role I see for the
Iblis.
Before
the war, the Iblis had a seat on the Ruling Council of angels and provided a much
needed contrary view. When Aaru became a
battleground, the Iblis was the one who lead the demons in their revolt. By the time the Imp series starts, the title
has been lost – no one has held it for over two million years. Although Sam ends up with the job, the demons
don’t recognize it. It’s an empty title,
only acknowledged by the angels as a representative on the Ruling Council. Which means paperwork, meeting agendas, four
five nine reports, and endless bureaucracy.
I tried to make the whole experience as Kafkaesque as possible – which
is an absolute horror for a little imp like Sam.
2. Is this part of the Imp series? how many books are there?
Yes! Elven Blood is the third book in the Imp
series. I’ve planned six books, and a
few spin-offs from the Imp world.
Even
though it’s book three, I craft each book as a standalone novel with a
beginning, a middle, and an end. Yes,
there are some questions that won’t be answered until later books, and there
are certainly a few things that will fly over a reader’s head that hasn’t read
the first few in the series, but they are absolutely written to be enjoyed on
their own.
3. What other breeds are there?
The
first book in the series (A Demon Bound) introduces the demons and angels as
well as werewolves. There’s an open
question throughout the series as to whether the werewolves are actually
Nephilim (the offspring of fallen angels and human women). It’s an ongoing conundrum, and I promise it
will be resolved before the series end.
The
second book (Satan’s Sword) adds in the vampires. They’re a rather enigmatic group, and I have
a spin-off novel dedicated to their convoluted politics and ruthless behavior!
Elven
Blood is the third book, and it goes into more detail of the elves. There are tidbits of information about them
in books one and two, but this book goes into more detail on their world and
issues. You’ll see more elves in book
five – especially my favorite bad-boy Lord Feille!
I’ve
really enjoyed the world building on this series, so there’s definitely a
chance another breed/race will show up in a spin-off. It’s not over until the cherub sings!
4. Who are the judges? do they decide the punishments?
The
angels are a controlling lot, and they consider themselves the judges of all
life under their watchful eyes. It’s all
about rules, balance, and proper evolutionary progress when it comes to my
celestial beings – but by their definition.
Sam is chaos personified, and she really throws a big ‘ole wrench in
angelic plans. Even though they may
punish her she still manages to turn things around her way. Because order needs a little chaos, don’t you
think?
5. What would you like my
readers to know?
I I hope that the Imp series has a great balance for all
readers. There is a huge amount of humor
in the books, but they’re not shallow.
For readers that seek it, there’s a strong philosophical vein running
throughout the books, as well as a theme of redemption. And of course action – lots and lots of
action!

Thank you for hosting
ReplyDeleteWow you really put a lot of thought into the novel, even to the point of not using Satan to offend people. Good for you! I do tend to stay away from books, even paranormal books, if they seem to be too preachy for me so that may have been a great decision!
