On a sweltering summer day near Reading Pennsylvania, the mundane lives of four Payless ShoeSource employees are forever altered and enriched when an unlikely accident occurs. Throughout, Drive-Thru Shoes is an examination of the smaller simpler moments of everyday minimum-wage life, where frustrations and disappointments of love and work are commonplace, but it is also a vivid picture of how the unexpected is ultimately the true boss of us all. Bittersweet in its honesty, entertaining in its peculiarity, this novella charms with both tension and action, pessimism and hope.
My Review:
I worked in retail for years! This book made me laugh at times and at other times I wanted to shake some of the crazy customers! Retail is never easy and it helps to have friends! There were parts of this book that I could definitely relate to. It was a fast and easy read. Well worth the time it took me to read.
I also hate shoe shopping. I don't think that I am fun to help pick out shoes. lol. This book definitely reminded me of working retail, and the characters lives and issues made this book much more easy to relate to.
I am giving this book a 4/5 and would love to see more great characters by the author! I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
My Interview:
1. Why Payless?
2. Are the 4 employees connected in any other was than their employer?
3. What would you like my readers to know?
Author Answers:
1.I chose Payless to serve as a fifth character of sorts in part because of the contrast that exists between fashion, shoes being the height of fashion in many regards these days, and the environment of affordable chain store culture. The two are usually far apart on the cultural spectrum but mix in a very unique way at Payless.
2.A major theme of the novella is that these employees began as only co-workers but faced with the store closing for renovations now realize that they've come to mean much more to each other than any of them ever thought possible.
3.As for what I'd like your readers to know, I am pushing the web experience of the story heavily as I think that is a unique and fresh approach to delivery these days. Beyond that, I think I am asking readers to look for the unique and magical in everyday events. My last work involved angels, demons, adventure etc. and I am departing from that to find wonder in the everyday.
There is a really cool blog about the book too where you can read some of the book! Check it out here: http://drivethrushoes.com/
