Daimones by Massimo Marino review

Dan and his family awake one day in a world where everyone is dead but nothing points to a cause. Initial searches for survivors yield nothing and, in panic, the family turns their house into a stronghold. Eventually, they find Laura, a survivor who wins their hearts…and leads Dan to temptation. Laura describes her panicking encounter with strange entities which Dan recognizes in his childhood hallucinations. He forces himself to find and confront them: An older power controls the fate of men.
A few selected will face the ultimate quest: a painful genetic transformation and work toward the rebirth of a new human race, or oblivion and death in isolation.

My Review:
The ending was not what I expected. What a great ending it was. I am still thinking about it. The plot is basic. Kill mostly all the humans, except for the ones you want to create a new human race. This book put a twist on who they picked, and genetics has a big role in the book. The story also includes a man with 2 wives. This is not an easy thing to discuss. However the author did such a great job of making it necessary that even I accepted it.
The author also made Dan a great character and I can not believe all he did for his family. I chuckled when Dan went on facebook to find survivors! This book also had "the chosen one" feel for me. Dan was chosen to be a survivor since he was little. They were not hallucinations.
This story was easy to read, and I read it in one sitting. The author did a fantastic job of creating a post kill the human race "war", and the way he described empty places was enjoyable to read.
The ending made me think. This is the first book in a trilogy, however this book stands on its own, and definitely has a strong ending.
I am giving this book a 5/5 and can not wait for the other 2 books in this series, and other books by this author. I was given a copy to review from Orangeberry book tours, however all opinions are my own!
