J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend by Colin Duriez book review

I have not read the Lord of the Rings, but I did see part of the movies. So I was of course interested to learn about the author. Tolkien is a legend in his own right for creating such an empire of imagination. He also wrote The Hobbit. I am sad to admit that I really did not know more about Tolkien. There was so much more to his story.

This book is a biography, and when reviewing biographies I never know if I am ruining the book. Fiction is different. You can't bend the truth. It is what it is. lol. I am sorry if I giveaway spoilers.

Tolkien did not have a good childhood. He was a poor orphan. His guardian devastated him by not letting him be with the woman he loved. He also lived through the horrors of WW1. This did not take away from his writing. He was a brilliant scholar that created a world of hobbits and the geography of middle earth that no one else could. He was very good friends with C.S. Lewis (two great minds), and he finally got to be with Edith his love. They stayed together until the day she died. Their love was deep and meaningful. Tolkien also wrote an earlier story about middle earth.
These are just a few of the main themes throughout the book. I recommend reading about Tolkien, It gives insight to his life and it made me understand his work better.
I was given a copy of the book to review, but all opinions are my own!
