She can't afford to lose this…or him

There's no way that struggling single mom Janie Young is going to lose Family Secrets. Not even to Dr. Burke Carter. The prize money and media exposure from the cooking-competition show will secure the future for her and her son, who has special needs. Sure, Burke is a talented chef with his own reasons to win, but he already has so much: wealth, a beautiful daughter, great looks…and definitely her attention. As their families become closer, Janie is beginning to care too much about him. But she can't afford to get involved. Not when everything is riding on beating him.

Excerpt :

This is an excerpt from a prequel to this series, THE MARRIAGE GIFT, which shows this book’s heroine, Janie Young, winning a chance to compete on the Family Secrets cooking show. The prequel was available for free last year and will go on sale this November in a Harlequin Heartwarming Thanksgiving anthology.

Corrine practically ran for the door when the bell sounded. It wasn't like Janie to be late.

The table wasn't set, but her friend was too astute to call her on it. Unlike Joe who used to understand her but didn't pick up on her vibes anymore. One of the many reasons she was glad for the divorce.

It hurt too much to live with someone who treated you as though you were invisible half the time, and someone who didn't know you the rest of the time. And hurt too much to live with him knowing that you were no longer making him happy.

Relief from pain brought joy.

"Where's Dawson?" The words were Joe's coming from right behind her. "Where is he?" she said, right on the tail end of Joe's question.

"Out in the car." Janie looked odd. Not worried. Or scared. But...nervous. She handed Joe the big lidded roasting pan that had been cooking their Thanksgiving Day bird for more than ten years. It had been a bridal shower gift from Dillon's Mom.

Corrine stepped past them. "I'll go get him," she said. Dawson would be calling her name, his rendition of it, as he always did when his mother pulled onto Corrine's street.

"No!" Janie's voice split the air, and split the calm inside of Corrine. "Wait." She stood there rubbing her hands together. Smiling. And looking worriedly between the two of them.

"I'm really sorry, guys. I know I shouldn't have done this...I knew yesterday that I shouldn't, but I did, and here we are, and..."

She gave them each another long glance, as though assessing their reaction to whatever she'd done before she actually let them know what it was.

Joe held the twenty pound bird in front of him as though it weighed no more than the towel surrounding the pan.

"What's wrong, sweetie?" Corrine asked. She and Janie had been best friends their entire lives. They told each other everything.

Except, apparently, when they didn't.

"You know that ad I saw about the Thanksgiving contest for that Family Secrets cooking show?" she asked, her hands kneading each other in double time now.

"You sent in your grandmother's dressing recipe," Corinne said, starting to feed off of Janie's excitement. She had no idea what this had to do with Dawson still being in the car, but... "Did you hear something back from them?"

Janie nodded, her grin growing slowly until it was a full blown smile. Accompanied by a gush. "I got the call yesterday! I'm a finalist! Can you believe it? The show's host, Natasha Stevens, is making dinner on set here in Palm Springs today, using all of the finalists' recipes. She had people write in who couldn't afford to make Thanksgiving dinner this year and chose four families to join her on stage to share her meal. The adults and kids all vote for their favorite dish, and the one that wins is a contestant this upcoming season!" The words came out loud enough for the neighbors to hear. But so quickly they were almost hard to understand.

"Well, let's get that boy out of the car and start celebrating," Corrine said, stopping to hug her friend tightly on her way to the car.

"No, wait," Corrine said, holding both of Corrine's forearms as she went to pull away. "That's just it. We aren't staying...."

The smile left her face. Or most of it did. The little bit that was left was tremulous at best. "Ms. Stevens invited all of the finalists to be in the audience for today's Thanksgiving special live show. She wants the winner to appear on stage at the end of the show, as a promo for the upcoming season. She even offered to pay flight and hotel for those who weren't local. So...I'm..."

"Going!" Joe said, nodding, the pan still suspended between his hands. "We'll be happy to watch Dawson for you!"

Corrine was frowning. Why hadn't Janie called her yesterday with this incredibly momentous news? As a single mother with no real marketable skills aside from cooking, Janie was having difficulty finding a way to afford all the time necessary to get Dawson to the therapies that would greatly increase his chances of integrating into regular classrooms and lead a fully productive life.

If she could make it as a chef, her financial and time worries would be over.

"Thank you, but..." Janie said, stilling holding on to Corinne. She looked her straight in the eye, begging for forgiveness? Understanding? "I'm allowed to bring one guest," she said, and Corinne instantly caught her meaning. She wanted Joe to watch Dawson alone so the two of them could—

"And I'm taking Dawson," Janie said. Then added in a rush, "It's a family show. Families' secret recipes. And Dawson...he's my family..."

When tears filled Janie's eyes, Corinne finally clued in. "You want to win more than just about anything, but you can't be on the show if Dawson is going to be an issue...."

Janie had already lost two jobs due to situations with her son. Once, when Dawson flipped out in daycare and she'd had to leave work, and another time when she'd been unable to travel due to her son's special needs. Corinne and Joe had been on vacation in Bali that time, or they'd have taken the boy.

Janie nodded her head.
