IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN…Series by CAROLE P. ROMAN Reviews

ABOUT THE “IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN…” BOOKS:

The “If You Were Me and Lived In…” books are an introduction to customs and cultures around the world. The series is a collection of twenty-two books designed to help children experience life from the perspective of a variety of other children from all around the world, in the hopes that they’ll see how similar we all really are.

The idea of countries, borders, and customs is sometimes difficult for youngsters to grasp. Carole breaks things down into various topics that even the youngest child can identify with – what their name might be, where the country is located, what they would call their parents, what kind of food would they eat, what one thing identifies the country, like a landmark. Children finish each book able to identify both similarities and differences, and with the added of having multiple books, can compare how life is all over the world.

My Reviews:
These books are great for young learners and adults as well. I love the fun graphics and the easy to understand plot. The author also includes correct terminology and lingo for that part of the world. The pictures are of people having fun and the author leaves no culture untouched. She also includes pronunciations !
  • Kenya: coomon names, capital, currency, Savannah, roasted goat, and home made toys all show us what is common in Kenya.
  • Egypt: Masr, Giza, Senet, historic artifacts are all new things that I learned about while reading this book.
  • American West: Tribes, Oregon, Trails, Bible, Saloon and cowboys, gold rush and pilgrims are all mentioned in this very informative book that includes famous people from the area.
  • Ancient Mali Empire: 1332 trade power, Mosques, drought, famous people and taking care of issues set the stage for how these people lived. Especially the age that you would be considered an adult.
These books are fun and have a lot of info in them even though they are short reads. I am giving each of these books a 5/5. I was given a copy, all opinions are my own.
