About This Author
Liz Mugavero has been writing stories since she could hold a pen. Before that, she would tell them to anyone who would listen (not many at the time). After deciding early on she would write books for a living, she practiced by writing bad, angst-filled poems, short stories and even a storyline for a soap opera–all by age 15. She never wavered from her goals despite all the usual questions including, “So are you going to be an English teacher with that degree in English?” or, “That writing thing sounds nice, but how are you REALLY going to make a living?”
She went on to get a master’s in writing and publishing and spent time in journalism, PR, and presently, corporate communications. And she’s confident this writing thing IS the way to make a living.
Aside from writing, she loves animals (has a houseful), the beach, reading other writers’ masterpieces and Starbucks coffee.

Where are you from?
I’m from the Boston area, and it’s still the place about which
I’m most nostalgic. Right now I live in Connecticut, but there’s nothing like
visiting home.
Tell us your latest news?
The fourth book in my Pawsitively Organic Mysteries, Murder
Most Finicky, was released at the end of December. I really enjoyed writing
this book. My main character, Stan Connor, got out of her small town for the
weekend and headed off to Newport, RI for a chefs’ retreat. Of course, a
murderer crashes the party and Stan is once again in the midst of a murder
investigation. Food, cats and over-the-top chefs are key components of this
one!
When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve been writing since I was old enough to make up a story.
Writing was always my escape, whether it was a (bad) poem after a not-so-great
day, or a short story about people doing way more exciting things than I was
doing. I also started writing because I loved the feeling I get after reading a
terrific book, and I wanted to be the one who invoked those feelings in people.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’ve always been a writer! I’ve been making up crazy stories
since I was a kid and encouraging people to come play in my worlds. I knew this
would be my profession - I think I’ve always known it - and always easily
identified with the word “writer.”
What inspired you to write your first book?
Animals! I wanted my rescue pals to have a place in my books, and
I wanted the books to be meaningful as well as entertaining. Incorporating
animal nutrition and rescue into my story felt right, and it’s given me a
wealth of storylines to pursue.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Everyone has their own voice, and I think every writer is always
developing that voice. I tend to underwrite in my first drafts, then go back
later and fill in descriptions of characters and place. Dialogue tends to come
a lot easier for me - I can hear the people talking in my head. I’m not sure if
that’s a good or a bad thing!
How did you come up with the title?
Titles for cozies are usually “punny.” For these books I try to
do something food related, cat related or, in the best scenario, both. I have
to admit I was stuck on the title for this one and my editor came to the rescue
with Murder Most Finicky.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to
grasp?
I’m a huge animal lover and advocate, and I’ve worked in rescue
for many years. I’m also very much into health and wellness and nutrition, both
for humans and animals. Given the subject matter of my books, I get to talk
about all of that stuff in a way that comes naturally for the characters and
doesn’t sound preachy.
What would you like my readers to know?
I’d like to give a big shoutout to all the readers out there -
because without you, we wouldn’t have anyone to write for! Meeting and
interacting with readers is one of my favorite parts of this job. And getting
to hear all about their pets is awesome!
