Interview

Where are you from?

I am an Air Force baby but hardly a brat ;) I was born in Portugal, moved around quite a bit, and eventually settled in upstate New York where my mother is from. My father is from Oklahoma.

Tell us your latest news?

My latest mystery, Perish in the Palm (Fortune Teller Mystery now called a Sunny Meadows Mystery book #4) came out in July. I just finished working on a historical women’s fiction which my agent is shopping around so cross your fingers. And I am now working on Hazard in the Horoscope (book 5) which got pushed back and won’t be coming out until later this fall.

When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing in 1989 because I loved to read and kept finding myself trying to rewrite the endings just for fun. Then I finally realized maybe I should just writing my own book. I even went into English and teaching because I loved to read and write.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I think writing is who we are not what we do, so for me, I believe I’ve always been a writer. I wrote poems and short stories as a child and then books as I got older. It just took me forever to learn the ropes, land an agent, and get published. And with the wonders of traditional and self-publishing, I can have the best of both worlds.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My very first attempt was a western romance because that was what I liked to read, but the book I actually finished became about five books and eventually got published. It’s called Destiny Wears Spurs.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I have to go in order. I can write down ideas for a later chapter, but I can’t seem to write that scene until I write all the other scenes first. I never used to plot and still don’t really plot my romance or women’s fiction, but with my mysteries I have to plot or I get off track. Even then, I still plot as I go with just a few chapters at a time.

How did you come up with the title?

This series focuses on a different fortune-telling tool for each book, so the titles are always a play on words revolving around that tool. In this case the psychic tool used is palm reading.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Not really. I mostly want my readers to be entertained with a good mystery to solve, fun characters, and plenty of laughs along the way.

What would you like my readers to know?

I write mysteries and teen superheroes under Kari Lee Townsend and women’s fiction and romance under Kari Lee Harmon. To find out more about me and all of my books check out my website at karileetownsend.com
