The Perfect Boyfriend by Renee Novelle Interview, Book Sale & Giveaway

Book #2 in the Boyfriend series

New Adult Romance
Date Published: TBD

The Perfect Boyfriend picks up right where we left Reagan and Ian in The Boyfriend List.
As their friendship blossoms quickly into a steamy romance, Reagan and Ian have to learn to navigate their shifting relationship...and everything that entails. But their newfound bliss doesn’t come without a few unexpected challenges.
In the midst of realizing just how sweet the romance can be between them, and all the benefits of their new dynamic, Reagan is informed that her ideal situation has changed. Not only will she need to begin taking on more classes to speed up her graduation date, but she’ll also have to start looking for a job to supplement her fading income. Meanwhile, Ian has chosen to pull out of school once his father is diagnosed with a terminal illness in order to help manage the family business and spend time with him while he still can. But he wrestles with the guilt of leaving Reagan behind, and the pressure of his new responsibilities.
As the two meet their new challenges head-on, they’ll be forced to discover whether or not they’re as compatible as lovers as they were as friends. With their focus pulled in so many directions, will they have what it takes to keep a long distance relationship alive? Can Ian prove that he’s still be the perfect boyfriend, or will they fold to statistics under the growing tensions of their lives? Throw in some manipulative exes, a new boss with an inflated ego, and a co-worker from hell and the two have a recipe for either a fairy tale ending, or a complete disaster.
The Perfect Boyfriend is a New Adult Romance about trust, love, and discovering the true depths of personal strength.

Interview:
What inspired you to write your first book?
I've been writing for such a long time, it's just always seemed part of me. I started jotting down stories and short books when I was nine, and it's been a passion of mine ever since. The first book in the series, The Boyfriend List, sort of evolved over a long period of time, and it's gone through a lot of revisions over the years. I started the initial concept when I was just out of college myself and I liked the idea of a girl finding her true love within her best friend, but I tucked the idea and initial draft away. At the time, the New Adult category didn't exist, and the story just didn't seem right in any other genre. Then when New Adult started picking up popularity, I knew that was the perfect voice for this story. So I pulled it out, dusted it off, updated and revised it, and here we are. I never intended for it to become a series, but I was so thrilled by readers responses to want to know more about Reagan and Ian that I started outlining the next two books, thus The Perfect Boyfriend became the continuation. It was a lot of fun to explore Reagan and Ian's lives a little more, and to see where their relationship would take them. Some of the scenes were a complete surprise to me, while others I used to explore a more typical college life.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I tend to write in a very casual, conversational tone. As if you were having a discussion with the characters or had gotten inside their heads.

How did you come up with the title?
In this book, I set out to prove if the perfect boyfriend really did exist, and if Ian could stand up to the ideal. Their relationship is tested along the way, and at the end Reagan discovers the truth about Ian's feelings for her, but I left it up to readers to decide if he's earned the title or not.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Not really a message, but rather an ideal. That a perfect love - whatever that means to you, and however it manifests in your life - can and does exist. Sometimes we just need to look beyond our preconceived notions to find it. And just because that love is tested, doesn't mean it won't hold up in the end.

How much of the book is realistic?
Oh, "realistic" is such a relative term. But I think most of it is fairly realistic. A lot of what Reagan goes through in the book I based on typical college scenarios. And a lot of what happens between Ian and Reagan in their relationship, and the little things that Ian does for her, I've based on my own experiences and things that I've actually gone through in relationships myself.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Absolutely! It's hard for me not to write about people that I know or things that have happened to me. I think a little piece of me is in each of the characters. But nothing in the book is based on just one person or experience or relationship. Rather it's a complete conglomeration of a lifetime of experiences.

What books have most influenced your life most?
There's no particular book that's really influenced me, but I read a lot of Nora Roberts in my early years and I think her easy writing style and great character development skills left a deep impression on me.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Probably Nora Roberts. She's mastered the perfect balance in her writing.

What book are you reading now?

I'm actually between books. I've just finished Sycamore Row and am bout to start reading Argo. I rarely read in the same genre I'm writing. So while I'm writing romance, I tend to reader thrillers or non-fiction. When I'm writing thrillers, I'll start to read romance.

What would you like my readers to know?

If you haven't read The Boyfriend List yet, you'll definitely want to pick it up before starting The Perfect Boyfriend. The book will make more sense that way. But keep in mind these books are just meant to be light and fun. They aren't too serious, no scene is particularly erotic. I really wanted to just evoke a little bit of the spirit of my own college experience, which was a lot of fun with a few life lessons thrown in for good measure.
