About
the Author:
M L Sparrow is currently the
author of four books: two YA Sci-fi’s, The
Demon Inside and Ghetto, an Adult
Fantasy called No Rest for the Wicked.
Player will be her first
foray into the world of Contemporary Romance. She will write pretty much
anything that pops into her head, no matter the genre, and enjoys keeping her
readers guessing as to what she will write next, though you can pretty much
guarantee that there will be some degree of romance!
As well as writing, M L Sparrow
enjoys travelling and has been to some amazing countries in the past few years,
her favourite of which was Japan. She never fails to gather inspiration from
her travels and has an endless supply of ideas for future novels…

are you from?
I’m for rainy England.
Tell
us your latest news?
My latest news is that Player, the first book in my
What Happens on Campus Series, will be released on the 1st of
September. It is my first foray into the world of contemporary romance and,
even if I do say so myself, I’m very happy with the result. So far I’ve
received lots of good feedback and I hope to receive more reviews from ARC
reviewers before the release date.
When
and why did you begin writing?
I don’t even remember. I’ve always loved reading and
I think that natural developed into a desire to write my own stories. From a
very young age I wanted to be an author and just never grew out of it!
When
did you first consider yourself a writer?
That’s a hard one. Even once I’d published my first
book, The Demon Inside, I didn’t really feel like a proper writer, however, some time in the past year I think I’ve
grown into one. Now, with three releases under my belt and another coming soon,
as well as having learnt so much in a short space of time, I definitely
consider myself a writer. I think it was just experience and confidence that I
needed to start thinking of myself as such.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
Though it was the third book I published, No Rest
for the Wicked, was actually the first book I ever completed. I actually wrote
it for a competition I saw in a magazine. I found the Prologue in an old
notepad when sorting through some of my things and decided to expand on it,
since I liked the almost fairy tale like atmosphere of it. The rest, as they
say, is history!
Do
you have a specific writing style?
Not really. Each book is unique, my writing style
depends on the characters and the type of book. I do have a tendency to write a
lot of description, because it’s something I enjoy when reading, but the
project I’m working on at the moment is very minimalistic with lots of short,
simple sentences and only small amounts of description, which leaves a lot of
the imagery up to the readers own imagination!
How
did you come up with the title?
I played around with a lot of titles for Player, but
in the end it was the fact that I’d already titled the second book that led to
the title for this one. I wanted the whole series to have snappy, similar
titles: Player, Flirt, Friend, Bully.
Is
there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Generally, this is a fun, sweet romance and was
written to entertain people. However, I feel like all books hold a message,
even I they’re not serious novels written to teach you something. The message I
hope people will get from Player is that they should seize the moment and live
life to the fullest.
How
much of the book is realistic?
It’s set in the real world, in real time, so in a
sense it’s realistic. However, it’s still fiction and none of the characters
are based on real people. I’ve never been to Texas, nor have I ever attended
College in America, so it all sprang from my imagination!
Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I actually got a partial scholarship to study in
America, which I worked really hard for, however, due to money problems I was
forced to pass it up. As you can probably guess I was very upset about it for a
long time and the What Happens on Campus Series was almost my way of venting my
frustration and helping me feel better.
What books
have most influenced your life most?
Jeez, that’s a hard one… My Best Friends Girl, by
Dorothy Koomson is the first book I remember reading that really moved me. As
did A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. More recently, I found E.
Lockhart’s novel, We Were Liars, very influential, though I couldn’t actually
tell you why! The Book Thief, The Fault in our Stars and You Against Me were
also very thought provoking…
If
you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I think Nalini Singh is an amazing writer. I’d love
to meet her one day and get some tips!
What
book are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Fight Club, by Chuck
Palahniuk. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what I think of it yet, because I
literally started it a few hours ago! However, if you want to check out my
thoughts once I’m finished I will be writing a review on my blog.
Are
there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I recently read The Book Thief and found it very
inspiring. I know Markus Zusak isn’t exactly a new author, but he’s new to me
since I’ve never read anything of his before and I’ll definitely be checking
out more of his books!
What
are your current projects?
I’m currently working on a novella set in Japan in
2011, call A Tangled Web (TBC). It follows the day to day life of school-girl
Tayio Hayashi as she falls in love with her best friend, Ryuu. But there’s a
problem… she’s currently dating his twin brother. Taiyo struggled the juggle
the two, lying to both of them, but when a true disaster strikes, in the form
of the Great East Japan earthquake and the devastation tsunami that followed,
she is suddenly confronted with the consequences of the selfish mistakes.
I’m also working on a slew of short stories, one of
which is ‘The Origins of Snow’, which will be a short story based on Snow White
and will introduce my new adult fantasy series.
What
would you like my readers to know?
I’m not the type of author that writes only a
certain genre. I like variety and I’m also eager to explore all different
genres, so you’ll never be bored. Check out my website to see if there is
