Twenty-eight-year-old psychologist, Alisha Dimarchi, is abducted by an obsessed client and imprisoned in his Pakistani compound for over two years. Forced to change her name and live as his second wife, her life is filled with trauma and heartbreak. Thrust into a world of violence and oppression, Ally must fight not only to keep herself alive but to protect the lives of the people she now considers family. At night, she retreats into her memories of the only man she has ever loved—a man she believes no longer loves her.

Thirty-four-year-old handsome surgeon, David Dimarchi, has spent the last two years mourning the disappearance of his wife. After a painful and isolated existence, he begins the process of healing. It is then he is visited by a stranger, who informs him that Ally is very much alive and needs his help. In a desperate attempt to save her, David enlists the help of a mercenary. Together they find themselves in the center of more than just a rescue mission. Will he be able to reach her in time, and if he does, will she still want him?

Excerpt

The slow drip of a leaky faucet disrupted Ally’s otherwise quiet slumber.

Ally.” The distant sound of David’s voice soothed her, enveloping her in a warm blanket of safety.

A smile tugged at her lips. Soon he’d crawl into bed and wrap his limbs around hers, cocooning her with his love.

Instead of the heat she anticipated, something coarse scraped against her cheek. When she tried to swat it away, her arms refused to comply.

Baby, wake up.” Her husband’s echoed tone became louder, rougher. “You need to wake up.”

The urgency in it made her eyelids flutter, pulling her further away from the dark claws of sleep.

Like a silent movie, foggy images of a dimly lit parking lot invaded her thoughts. A woman, tall and lean, walked the deserted space alone. With each clip of her heels against the paved road, the haze cleared a little more. Ally’s heart raced when the woman’s features came into view. Long, curly, black hair, dark brown eyes, tanned complexion.

It was her.

Two sets of hands emerged from the shadows, dragging her into the woods. The taller of the two men covered the woman’s mouth, muting her screams as she wrestled to break free, until the other one slammed a brick into the base of her skull, plunging her into darkness.

This must be a dream.

Rays of light pierced the darkness as Ally’s heavy eyelids fought to open. When she shifted, instead of soft sateen, her cheek scraped against a cold, hard surface.

Alisha? Can you hear me?” This voice wasn’t David’s. It sounded thick, heavy with accent and oddly familiar. So familiar, she shivered.

Reviews for The Second Wife

The Second Wife is one of those rare novels that will lurk in the back of your mind for weeks. With stunning precision, Kishan Paul throws the reader into a world of clandestine organizations and brutal politics. The gripping characters wrench your heart and make you cringe with fear. A rollercoaster of suspense and emotion not to be missed. ~ Aubrey Wynne Author of Dante’s Gift and Rolf’s Quest

Kishan Paul’s writing shines in this beautifully written psychological thriller filled with heart-gripping emotion as the heroine unearths an inner strength she didn’t know she possessed. – Cait Jarrod, Bestselling Author

"The Second Wife is a poignant story of love, domestic violence, and mental strength. It grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until you've finished the last page. No wait, it doesn't let go at all… I had the pleasure of betareading it, and the wide range of emotions it stirred in me are still right under the surface." – Lea Bronsen award winning author of The Perfect Shoot

This is a gripping story, brilliantly woven from start to finish. I’ll never forget Ally. She’s as real to me as anyone else because her story isn’t some forgettable fictional work. No way you are walking away from this one the same way. I actually took a break between this novel and my next one. I wasn’t ready to begin another journey just yet. Amazing work, Kishan Paul.” – Kristen Shanchez, reader

Interview
Where are you from?
I was born in India but have called Texas home since I was 4 years old.  I’m very Texan in a lot of ways and very Indian in others. It’s kind of a cool combination, I think.
Tell us your latest news?
My novel The Second Wife releases October 14th and it is a romantic suspense/ thriller. I can’t wait for you to read all about Alisha and David.
When and why did you begin writing?
Until about two years ago, the idea of writing books had never occurred to me. One day this idea of a woman being kidnapped took root in my brain and I couldn’t get rid of it until I wrote her story. Now here I am publishing her story.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
For me it wasn’t until I published my first full length novel and I started getting reviews that I considered myself a writer. There is something humbling about people buying my books and then sharing their experiences. It’s a very surreal feeling.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I still remember the night, I was walking to my car in a deserted parking lot. By the time I was in the car, the story line for this book, The Second Wife, was in my head. It was all I could think of until, finally I got out of bed that night and started writing it down. Although Blind Love was the first novel I had published, The Second Wife was the first story I ever wrote.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I’m a panster. I write by the seat of my pants. I kinda get obsessed with the story and the scenes. It’s all I think about. I play and replay the scenes, feel and then refeel the incidents. Each chapter is like a week long process for me. The first day it’s kind of the bones of the chapter, really rough but what’s going to happen is written out. Every day after I go back and work on the layers: the dialogue, the way each person in the scene felt about the situation and how they showed that, the environment. Halfway through the week, I’ve scrapped most of what I first wrote and have something entirely different.
How did you come up with the title?
My main character is Alisha. She is a therapist who is kidnapped by her client and taken far away from her home. The title of the book came from the fact that Alisha was forced to be his second wife.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
There are so many messages in The Second Wife. I think one of the major morals is that goodness exists in our world. No matter how ugly or evil some may be there are good. Sometimes they may be hard to find, but they are there.
How much of the book is realistic?
A lot of the elements in the story can be found in the news we watch. The Second Wife covers real life issues we face in our world: terrorist groups, suicide bombings, human trafficking.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
The Second Wife is a work of fiction. Thankfully, no one I know has had to go through the kind of ordeals Alisha endures in the story.
What books have most influenced your life most?
There are too many to list. Let’s see: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
What book are you reading now?
Sonali Dev’s A Bollywood Bride. Wow, what an amazing story.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
What are your current projects?
I just started One Sunny Daye. It will be the story of Sunshine Daye, a character from Blind Love. Sunny’s an erotic romance writer and funny. Needless to say, I’m having a blast with her story.
What would you like my readers to know?
I’d love to share with you and the readers the reason why I write. I want readers to connect with my stories, feel what the characters feel, ache for them and become absorbed in their lives. By the time readers finish the story, I want them to walk away feeling like they were part of something special. That they have learned something new about a subject (blindness, addiction, cancer, kidnapping) and how that issue impacts a person both emotionally and physically. For me The Second Wife does all of that and I hope your readers feel the same.
